what an amazing day i had today!

went aboard USNS Mercy, which is docked at the San Diego US Naval Base right now.  The USNS Mercy does their Pacific Partnership 2012 every summer, going to South East Asian countries, such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam…and the Philippines! to do some humanitarian work and help those really needing medical attention.

Pre Dental Society asked my organization, kabayanihan, to help them teach the Navy about filipino culture and language so that they get a feel of what the philippines is like before they get there.  so today’s first workshop was culture.  despite my epic fail in public speaking…my group was AMAZING and did really well.  i’m so proud! and blessed to have met such great, passionate, intelligent, and hard-working people! I’m glad that at least they have experience in speaking in front of more than 5 people.

after our workshop, we had a tour of the USNS Mercy, and boy…it was AH-MAZE-ING! first off, it is HUUUUUMUNGOUSSSSS.  the pictures definitely do not do the ship justice.  it is just so overwhelming.  the inside is just as awesome.  it is truly a fully functional hospital—complete with operating rooms, x rays, cat scans, dental clinic, fully operating pharmacy, lab, EVERYTHING!  also, they have a barber shop with free hair cuts, free laundry, kajillion gyms (i guess that makes sense, they are the navy), zumba classes, post office, EVERYTHING!

also just as amazing? the view.  san diego is beautiful.  especially on a sunny, not-a-cloud-in-the-sky day.

on top of USNS mercy, you see all the other ships around the Naval Base, such as BATTLESHIPS (wtf those are real?! i thought those were just in the game!)  complete with guns and everything.

I would have taken more pictures but, in the beginning they stressed NO PICTURES so i didnt dare take my camera out.  however our sailor tour guide just said to make sure to not take pictures with flash. darn if only i knew that sooner.

I really hope I get to board the ship for the trip this summer.  I am willing to miss my college graduation.  I’m not kidding.  This will be an opportunity of a life time, and also be an amazing experience.  i just know it.  time to save up money!

#1: a healthy relationship (atleast for right now) is one in which two people care and love each other, but to an extent where each has their own life.  They have their own friends, their own interests, their own goals.  yes, they are lovers and best friends, but they are also their own person.

#2: people come into your lives for a season, a reason, or a lifetime.  there will be people there in your life that will come and go, and that’s okay.  sometimes some people just aren’t worth it.  but you learn to fight for the people that ARE worth it.  and i learned, that while there will be people that aren’t worth it, there will ALWAYS be someone who is.

#3:  being a good leader doesn’t mean taking up all the responsibility yourself. being a good leader means delegating tasks amongst other people.

#4:  you have to be able to separate personal from professional, and friendship from business.  even if you have disagreements with your friends over “business” things such as housing, rent, club matters, getting things done in time for deadlines, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of your friendship.  some things are just business, and that’s that.

to be continued…
